Wellbeing in Poole: A Slower Sunday at The Dolphin

Autumn asks a lot of people. Darker mornings, colder walks, the general sense of everything speeding up towards Christmas.

This weekend we are doing the opposite. Two things are happening this weekend that are both, in different ways, about slowing down and making do with what you already have.

Sensory Sunday, Sunday 27 September

On the last Sunday of every month The Dolphin dims the lights, turns the music down and generally takes the volume out of the building.

It is designed for anyone who finds a busy shopping centre hard work, including autistic visitors and people with sensory sensitivities. In practice a lot of people simply prefer it. Quieter is nicer for most of us.

It runs 10am to 5pm. No booking, no special arrangements. Just a calmer version of the same place.

Bournemouth Repair Kitchen, Saturday 26 September

Bring along a broken item and the volunteers at Bournemouth Repair Kitchen will help you fix it rather than bin it. Small electricals, textiles and the toaster you have been meaning to deal with since spring. It is free, it is friendly and it keeps things out of landfill. At GATHER all day Saturday.

Looking after yourself in the shoulder season

Access Wellbeing over in KINGLAND is a good place to start if you are after something more considered. Holland & Barrett covers the supplements and the practical end of it. The Body Shop and Opal Beauty are there for the bits that feel like a treat rather than a chore.

None of this needs to be a project. Small and regular beats ambitious and abandoned.

Also on at GATHER

Pine Walk Artist brings original artwork to GATHER from Monday 28 to Wednesday 30 September, on display and for sale.

Then on Thursday 1 October we mark International Day of Older People, a good reminder that this town works best when nobody gets left out of it.

Plan your visit

The Dolphin is in the middle of Poole with parking on site. Sunday is the quiet one. Come and use it.
